Start by choosing your program and university.
- First things first, figure out what you want to study and which universities offer the best programs for it. I found that ranking sites and student reviews really help.
Take the required exams.
- Most universities need you to take certain tests. For master’s programs, that’s usually the GRE or GMAT. And you’ll definitely need TOEFL or IELTS to prove your English skills. I remember stressing over TOEFL but it wasn’t that bad with some practice.
Prepare your application documents.
- You’ll need a solid Statement of Purpose (SOP) and Letters of Recommendation (LORs). Plus, don’t forget your transcripts and resume. I spent quite a bit of time perfecting my SOP because it really makes you stand out.
Apply to universities.
- This part’s all about deadlines. I made a spreadsheet to keep track of each university’s application requirements and deadlines. It kept me sane!
Figure out funding.
- Studying in the US isn’t cheap, so I looked into scholarships and assistantships. Also, some universities offer student loans for international students, which is a lifesaver.
Get your student visa (F-1 Visa).
- Once you get an acceptance letter, the university will send you an I-20 form. You’ll need this to apply for the F-1 Visa. The visa interview can be nerve-wracking, but just be honest and clear about your study plans.
Prepare for your move.
- This is the fun (and stressful) part! Booking flights, finding accommodation, and sorting out health insurance. I made a checklist to stay on top of everything.
